CBD For Nausea: Is It Effective?
Nausea, and the vomiting that sometimes comes with it, are not illnesses. Instead, they are symptoms of a variety of possible medical conditions.
The issue can occur in adults and kids. Pregnant women are extremely likely to suffer from it, especially in the first trimester. We can tell you that anywhere from 50% to 90% of pregnant women experience nausea. And, 25-55% experience vomiting. I
It is also more prevalent than you think across the general population. An estimated 12% of us experience it at least once a year. But CBD for nausea potentially offers a way to relief.
In this article, we check out how CBD oil for nausea is potentially beneficial. First, let’s explore it in greater depth.
What Is Nausea?
Nausea is best described as an extremely unpleasant sensation of unease or discomfort in the stomach. If you have sudden nausea, your stomach feels queasy, and you have an urge to vomit. Depending on the cause, the ‘feeling’ can pass quickly or last for hours. In some cases, people feel compelled to throw up, to help alleviate the sensation physically.
It is a non-specific symptom with a wide variety of potential causes. You may experience nausea due to stomach infection, virus, or motion sickness. But sometimes it is caused by a more serious bodily function, such as spinal fluid, or something involving the abdominal or pelvic organs. The symptom may ‘pass’ by itself or else it is a sign of an underlying illness.
Conditions related to your brain or spinal fluid that cause nausea include:
- Head trauma
- Brain tumors
- Migraine headaches
There is also a long list of issues relating to the abdominal and pelvic organs that contribute. These include:
- Kidney disease
If you have nausea, inner ear problems, nausea, and vertigo are typical symptoms. Have you ever felt nauseous in a car ride, on a plane, or a boat? If so, there is a possibility you suffer from motion sickness. Related issues that cause nausea include benign positional vertigo and labyrinthitis. There is a suggestion that CBD for nausea could help. We explore this issue a little later on.
What Causes Nausea? Other Potential Reasons
It pays to analyze what the potential causes of nausea are. You can have nausea without vomiting. One of the reasons why CBD oil possibly works for nausea is because of its effects on the endocannabinoid system (ECS). We will explore that particular issue a little later on.
There is a myriad of psychological factors at play that could induce nausea. Have you ever witnessed someone else vomiting? How did it make you feel? For a lot of people, that particular scene causes nausea. Believe it or not, some medical students feel nauseous when seeing a dead body for the first time.
Conditions such as social anxiety disorder, bulimia, anorexia, and generalized anxiety disorder have nausea as a symptom. A study by Haug T.T., published in General Hospital Psychiatry in 2002, looked at the prevalence of nausea in the community. The team found that “functional gastrointestinal disorders are strongly related to anxiety and depressive disorders.” An incredible 80-90% of people with anxiety or depression suffer from such issues!
Nausea and vomiting are common side effects of chemotherapy. It is essential to manage the condition. Otherwise, it will have a significantly harmful impact on the patient’s quality of life. A failure to control nausea could result in malnutrition, dehydration, and broken bones. For these patients, it is worth trying CBD for nausea.
In general, nausea is a symptom that affects you temporarily. There is no need to panic necessarily if you vomit. It is often nothing more than your body trying to eliminate whatever is making you feel unwell. Occasionally, nausea is a sign of something more serious. It is worth contacting your doctor in the event of any of the following.
- The vomit contains blood.
- You have severe abdominal pain.
- The vomiting lasts for more than 24 hours.
- You have a stiff neck or a headache.
- Your urine is dark, or else you find it hard to urinate. These are potential signs of dehydration.
How to Get Rid of Nausea?
Medication designed specifically for vomiting is called an antiemetic. There is a range of over-the-counter options. Bismuth subsalicylate may help if you have diarrhea, an upset stomach, or gastroenteritis. Pepto-Bismol is one of the most famous brands. However, DO NOT use this type of drug if you are allergic to aspirin. It is also not suitable for children under the age of 12, or those with chickenpox. Side effects include an increased risk of constipation or tinnitus.
Antihistamines are also used to reduce the inner ear’s ability to sense motion. This type of drug is often used to combat motion sickness. Adverse effects include dry eyes, sleepiness, or dry mouth. As you’ll see below, CBD for nausea could help. There are also home remedies for nausea, including chamomile tea.
CBD For Nausea: Is It Effective?
Remember, the brain, GI system, and nervous system are all involved when we feel nauseous. As things stand, the medical field knows more about the physiology of vomiting than nausea. As a result, there are more effective treatments for those who throw up as part of feeling nauseous.
It appears as if one of the ways to control symptoms involves focusing on specific receptors in the brain and the GI tract. Most pertinently, the receptors that produce and bind with a neurotransmitter called serotonin. Zoloft is another popular antiemetic drug that works by blocking the nauseating effects of serotonin release.
CBD oil could work for nausea because it interacts with receptors that release serotonin. In small doses, CBD oil for nausea could prove useful in managing nausea and vomiting. There is also evidence that CBD helps ease anxiety. As a result, calmer patients are better able to handle the unwanted nauseous feeling.
Interestingly, the acidic form of CBD, known as CBDA, is also active at the serotonin receptors. A study by Bolognini D., published in the British Journal of Pharmacology in March 2013, made some interesting findings. The researchers found that CBDA was an even better antiemetic than CBD or THC. Admittedly, the study’s subjects were shrews, but it is an exciting discovery, nonetheless.
To utilize CBDA, you must avoid decarboxylating your marijuana or hemp. CBDA exists in the raw version of the plant. Once you expose it to heat, CBDA becomes CBD.
What Does the Research Say?
THC and CBD are the ‘major’ cannabinoids in marijuana and hemp. They are the most prevalent, best-known, and most widely studied. Both may be effective at managing nausea and vomiting due to interaction with the ECS’ CB1 receptors. It seems as if the activation of these receptors helps reduce vomiting.
Parker L.A. published a study in the British Journal of Pharmacology in August 2011. It looked at how cannabinoids could help regulate nausea and vomiting. The researchers concluded that cannabinoid compounds could have promise in treating nausea in chemotherapy patients.
A study by Rock E.M. was published in the British Journal of Pharmacology in April 2012. It looked at CBD’s effects on nausea. It found that the cannabinoid was extremely effective at producing anti-nausea results. One possible reason is due to its indirect activation of the 5-HT(1A) autoreceptors in the brain.
Sharkey et al. had a study on cannabinoids’ effect on nausea and vomiting published in January 2014. In the European Journal of Pharmacology, the researchers determined that cannabinoids and their receptors play an essential role in regulating nausea and emesis. The team also intimated that it was possible to use the ECS in the treatment of vomiting and nausea.
Another relevant study featured Rock E.M. as the author. It was published in Psychopharmacology in September 2016. Its purpose was to determine the potential of oral combined cannabis constituents to reduce feelings of nausea. The researchers described higher doses of THC and CBDA as ‘maximally effective.’
Why Use CBD Oil for Nausea?
CBD oil for nausea is a potentially useful way to combat the unpleasant feelings you get. But its legalality is under contention in many states, so its important to check the relgulations where you live. The Farm Bill of 2018 allows the growth of hemp with a THC content of no more than 0.3%. As for the right CBD oil dosage for nausea, it is best to start slowly. Increase the dosage gradually until you believe it is helping you.
Final Thoughts on CBD Oil for Nausea
At present, most of the research available involves the effects of cannabinoids on vomiting. There are a growing number of studies that look at how CBD impacts nausea. We have known about the potential for cannabis to alleviate the sensation. Most states with an MMJ program include nausea as a qualifying condition.
However, not everyone wants to experience the intoxicating high that goes along with THC. That’s why CBD has gained such popularity; legal products won’t contain enough THC to be psychoactive.
The 2018 Farm Bill removed industrial hemp from the list of controlled substances. While it didn’t legalize CBD, it should increase the level of research into the cannabinoid. Perhaps we will find even more studies that show the benefits of using CBD oil for nausea. The condition ranges from causing inconvenience to significantly disrupting someone’s quality of life. If you are in the latter category, you will try almost anything to improve matters. Perhaps cannabidiol is something worth considering?

Federal marijuana prohibition remains a significant stumbling block in the quest to study the plant in detail. We are mainly reliant on data from research performed overseas. The government allows the University of Mississippi to grow cannabis for research. However, the herb grown there doesn’t resemble what you’ll find in the average licensed dispensary. Until […]
