What is a CBD Salve?
By far, the most common method of imbibing CBD is in using CBD oil. A simple oral application of CBD oil, or perhaps administered in your food, can make consuming CBD oil a hassle-free process.
However, despite its popularity, there are still some people that loathe the idea of having to take CBD oil. Whether this is because of the taste (which can sometimes be a bit acrid or bitter) or because they hate the texture of putting greasy oil in your mouth, many people are desperate to find alternatives to CBD oil.
One great alternative is to use a CBD salve instead; however, what is a CBD salve? Is it as medically serious and industrial as it sounds?
What Is a Salve?
Broadly speaking, a salve is any physical ointment that is applied for the purpose of treating an injury.
Back in ancient times, salves were commonly made from any sticky substance like beeswax that is mixed with herbs designed to promote healing or generally help treat injuries.
One of the earliest uses of honey was as a salve, as it not only coated the injured area and protected it from dirt and debris, but it also encouraged the healing of the wound and fought against potential infection.
However these days, salves are a bit more advanced, with a myriad of different ingredients and useful mediums that humankind has discovered to make treating all manner of various injuries not only possible but incredibly convenient.
A great example is the UK and US army, who issue all of their soldiers with a topical salve containing antibiotics that help protect open wounds from infection.
CBD salve is made in the same vein, as it is designed to be applied topically, meaning that you coat a damaged or injured area in the CBD salve and expect it to work through absorption.
But what about CBD salve? Is it similar to old fashioned salves with natural ingredients and designed to prevent infection, or is it something a bit more advanced?
What is CBD Salve and What Does It Consist of?
Unlike the salves of hundreds of years past, CBD salve is usually nothing more than two ingredients: Cannabidiol and some inert, edible oil that holds it in suspension.
Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, is a cannabinoid extract from the cannabis plant that exists alongside the more famous THC. This cannabinoid has several useful properties in the human body, all possible thanks to its interaction with the endocannabinoid system, a health system that works with a variety of different bodily functions.
This CBD is held in suspension within an inert food oil, usually coconut oil or hemp seed oil. This allows the CBD to be held in suspension without deteriorating or degrading, as well as making sure it doesn’t go off.
However, there is another crucial ingredient that changes this from a regular CBD oil to a CBD salve – it also contains a variety of other nutrients and, often wax, to make it that much easier to absorb into your skin.
Through a unique production process, this blend of different ingredients creates a final product that is not only rich in CBD oil and other useful nutrients but also can be easily assimilated into your skin through osmosis.
But what is this production process?
How Is CBD Salve Made?
The process of making CBD salve is quite similar to the operation of producing CBD oil. First, cannabis (which is usually either a CBD rich strain of regular marijuana or industrial grade hemp) is put through an extraction process, whereby carbon dioxide is heated to a supercritical temperature.
This allows the CO2 to change its form and become a supercritical liquid, making it act as both a liquid and a gas. This makes it perfect for going into physical substances like plants and taking chemical compounds with it, allowing it to be then funneled through the cannabis, taking the CBD with it.
This is then suspended within inert food oil, likely coconut oil or hemp seed oil. From there, it is CBD oil, except it isn’t done yet; it is then mixed with a variety of different substances, except now it isn’t about preserving the CBD, but instead about making it as pleasent to the touch as possible.
Most frequently, beeswax is added, primarily to make it silky when it touches your skin, while also providing insulation that ensures that all other chemicals added get a chance to interact with your skin.
If the manufacturing process is stopped here, you are left with a very simply flavored, rather uninteresting CBD salve.
However, it is pretty standard for other ingredients to be added, though this time, they are primarily added for flavor. Despite how strange that sounds, edible herbs and flavor compounds like rosemary, thyme, and even cinnamon are frequently used here. So that they can make the final CBD salve not only smell good but also leave an enjoyable flavor behind that leaves your skin feeling fresh for hours after you use it.
This is then sealed in a cosmetic pot, usually in an attempt to make it look like a regular moisturizer and try and dispel some of the uncomfortability that often surrounds CBD products.
Now that you have your finished CBD salve, how exactly are you supposed to use it?
How Do You Use CBD Salve?
Most people are more used to applying CBD orally, using either a capsule or with regular oil. However, topical CBD products like CBD salve are imbibed in a very different way.
As might be expected from something called “topical,” you apply CBD salve onto the specific place on your body that needs to be treated with CBD.
Meaning anywhere on your body that is experiencing pain; this may be the cause of a recent injury or inflammation.
Once you have identified the area of pain or irritation, open up your CBD salve and take enough to coat your finger thoroughly. Then, rub the salve across the affected area, making sure to cover it entirely to ensure that you get enough CBD onto the injury.
What will happen is that the CBD salve that you have applied will be slowly absorbed into the skin. Allowing the CBD not only to enter your body exceptionally quickly, but also to begin tackling the problem that it is placed on right away.
Once the CBD is absorbed into your skin, you can also enjoy the physically warming and moisturizing sensation of both the beeswax and the coconut oil, soothing your skin and ensuring that it doesn’t dry out. There is actually a myriad of different CBD salve brands out there that are actually able to provide all kinds of different effects just from the additional chemicals added to the CBD salve.
After a while, any residual beeswax and oil will rub off or be carried away by your sweat, leaving your skin moisturized, smooth and crystal clear, while at the same time giving you a nicely sized, specifically targeted dose of CBD.
Final Thoughts on CBD Salves
CBD salve is, despite its similarity to other cosmetic products, one of the most confusing looking products. The very idea of applying any medicinal product on your skin directly is often seen as far less desirable than merely taking it orally or through an injection.
However, CBD salve combines not only the simplicity of putting moisturizer on your body but also the practical and comforting effects of CBD.
This means that not only is it incredibly easy to use, but you also can apply it while on the go in public without looking like you are taking CBD. This is an excellent benefit for those that don’t want people knowing about their CBD usage or want to enjoy some privacy.
An excellent additional benefit is that, after you have used your CBD oil, you not only get to enjoy its medicinal benefit but also can enjoy the experience. The beautiful smells and feelings associated with the herbs, spices, and additional ingredients that are commonly included within CBD salves.
Whatever you are looking for, either a new moisturizing product or a way to get CBD where you really need it, CBD salve is an excellent alternative to other methods of imbibing CBD, so give it a try the next time you visit your local CBD retailer.
It might be a little different, but it’s also a lot better in an entirely new way.
If you lament the relatively low strength of some cannabidiol products, perhaps you could try CBD wax? If you elect to vaporize it, you may find that it affects rather quickly. Its types include CBD shatter and CBD concentrate. In recent times, those looking for a stronger dose of cannabidiol now advocate for CBD wax. […]
CBD laws in the UK, and cannabis, in general, have always existed in somewhat of a strange legal “grey” area. Cannabis itself is still illegal. It’s officially designated as a Class B drug that comes with hefty penalties or potential prison time for its use. However, despite the plant’s total illegality, CBD itself is actually […]
The rise of the CBD industry has also encouraged the gradual acceptance of other common drugs as well. However, this doesn’t mean an increase in dangerous substances like heroin or cocaine. But instead, other substances more similar to CBD, like Kratom. Kratom is intriguing as it is a natural plant with similar effects to cannabis, […]
