CBD For Migraines [The Ultimate Relief Pill]

November 5, 2017

According to, approximately 37 million Americans are afflicted by migraines; and this condition affects up to 13% of adults. 2-3 million people have ‘chronic migraines,’ and almost 5 million people have at least one migraine a month. The Migraine Research Foundation shows that it is a global problem as it is the world’s third most prevalent illness.

What people don’t realize is the severity of a migraine attack and what it does to a person. It is small wonder that an increasing number of Americans are eschewing traditional treatments and focusing on CBD as a new way to deal with migraines. 91% of migraine sufferers admit that they are unable to work or function normally during an attack.

Whether you find it hard to work or else an attack takes you to the emergency room, keep reading to discover how CBD can help tackle your migraine.

Traditional Migraine Treatments & Their Side Effects

According to the Mayo Clinic, migraine medication falls into two distinct categories.

Pain-Relieving Medication

These are short-term painkillers you are supposed to consume as soon as possible after experiencing a symptom of a migraine. It is normally a good idea to lie down in a dark room and rest after taking these tablets. Common options include:

  • Regular Pain Relievers: Well-known medications such as Aspirin or Advil are used for quick relief, and while there are plenty of drugs marketed especially for migraines, they are ineffective when it comes to severe cases.
  • Triptans: This medication works by constricting the blood vessels and blocking pain pathways to your brain. Common Triptans include Zomig, Relpax, and Frova.
  • Ergots: These are said to be more effective than Triptans and work best in cases where you’ve had pain for more than 48 hours.

Other options include anti-nausea medications, opioids, and glucocorticoids.

Preventive Medication

A physician may prescribe preventive medication if you have four or more bad attacks a month, if your attacks last 12+ hours if your symptoms include prolonged weakness or numbing or if pain-relieving medication doesn’t work.

These are long-term solutions, but you might not feel the impact for a few weeks. Typical preventive drugs include:

  • Cardiovascular Drugs: Beta blockers are capable of reducing the length and frequency of migraine attacks.
  • Antidepressants: They can work by impacting the level of serotonin and other brain chemicals.
  • Anti-Seizure Drugs: Relevant drugs include Topamax and Depacon, and they can reduce the frequency and duration of migraine attacks.

Other options include Botox and NSAIDs.

There are side effects reported with almost every option:

  • Pain Relievers: Ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding.
  • Triptans: Nausea, muscle weakness, and reactions at the injection site.
  • Ergots: Can cause nausea and vomiting to get worse.
  • Antidepressants: Weight gain, insomnia, and constipation.
  • Anti-Seizure Drugs: Weight loss, diarrhea, memory and concentration problems.

How CBD Can Help With Your Migraines

With such a long list of side effects associated with migraine medication, it is not a surprise to find that more and more people are turning to CBD for a solution to migraines. It is worth remembering that cannabis has been used to treat headaches for thousands of years and in the modern era, people who use it report a reduction in the severity and frequency of their migraine attacks. Best of all, they don’t have to deal with nasty side effects.

The Research

One of the most interesting pieces of research relating to migraines and CBD was conducted recently. The findings of the study were reported at the 3rd Congress of the European Academy of Neurology which took place in Amsterdam in June 2017.

The study was led by Dr. Maria Nicolodi of the Interuniversity Center in Italy and was designed to investigate the efficacy of CBD when treating cluster and migraine headaches. It was a two-phase study.

In phase one, 48 adults with chronic migraine received a dose of cannabis which was comprised of two compounds; 19% THC and 9% CBD. Remarkably, patients that received a daily 200mg dose of the THC: CBD compound for three months experienced 55% less pain! Interestingly, patients who received doses of 100mg or less reported little in the way of pain reduction.

Phase two involved 79 people with chronic migraine and 48 with cluster headache. The migraine group received either 200mg of the THC: CBD combination or 25mg of an antidepressant called amitriptyline per day. The cluster headache group received either 200mg of THC: CBD a day or 80mg of a calcium channel blocker called verapamil.

Patients that experienced acute pain were allowed take another 200mg of THC: CBD. Amongst the migraine patients, the THC: CBD combo reduced pain by 40.4% over three months; amitriptyline also performed well with a reduction in pain of 40.1%. Those who took the THC: CBD dose also experienced a 43.5% reduction in pain intensity.

Oddly enough, the THC: CBD dose was only effective in the cluster headache group if they had experienced migraine as a child. The study concluded that cannabinoids are effective when preventing migraine attacks but are less so for people with cluster headaches.

What CBD Oils Should You Use For Migraines?

While research is still relatively limited, it is clear that only oils high in CBD are likely to be effective when treating migraines. We carefully analyze all the old and new CBD providers on the market to ensure they are genuinely creating products with pure CBD and no additives or chemicals. Final Thoughts on CBD & Migraines

Early research into the effect of CBD on migraines suggests that it is probably more effective than prescription medications when it comes to reducing the frequency and intensity of migraine headache attacks.

Hopefully, further research will prove the efficacy of CBD as a painkiller as it would enable it to supplant opioids as the pain reliever of choice. As you probably know, the United States is in the midst of an opioid epidemic with tens of thousands of people dying from opioid abuse annually. CBD, on the other hand, provides a clean and natural way to fight back against pain.

Getting Started with CBD Oil

If you suffer from anxiety (like me), depression or pain and are looking to get started with CBD oil, you need information on how to buy CBD oil, or you’re simply looking to learn more about CBD products, you’ve arrived at the right place.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol, aka CBD, is a compound found in the cannabis plant that has significant medical benefits. CBD can be extracted from two different species of the Cannabis Sativa L plant, which include Cannabis and Hemp. Unlike its rival THC, CBD does not make people feel “stoned” and can actually counteract the psychoactivity of THC.

One of the main advantages of CBD is its non-psychoactive affect making it a great option for people looking for relief from inflammation, anxiety, insomnia, seizures, spasms, and other conditions.
As I mentioned above the primary distinction between Hemp and CBD oil is the part of the plant they are derived from and what parts of the plant are used to create the oil. Hemp oil is typically made from pressing cannabis seeds to extract the fatty oil from within, while some that have mastered the CBD extraction process also use the flowers as they contain high percentages of CBD. CBD oil, on the other hand, is usually made from the flowers of cannabis plant through various extraction methods.

How Does CBD Affect Your Body?

The way marijuana affects your body varies from person to person as it will often depend on genetics, tolerance to the cannabinoids, medical health, DNA, and more. It also depends on the way you consume the CBD, for example, the effects of vaping CBD are far different to smoking it in the form of high-CBD cannabis strains.

CBD and the way it affects us is still of somewhat a mystery to researchers they still try to figure out how it effects the EndoCannabinoid system. During the previous century, it was discovered that our bodies have receptors within the brain and central nervous system. Specific cannabinoids such as CBD bind to those receptors and activate the EndoCannabinoid System (ECS). This then provides a wide range of psychological and physical benefits helping the body.

Without going into specifics, cannabinoids signal to the body to create endocannabinoids and build more receptors. This helps the body to limit things associated with pain and inflammation, repairs cells and provides a wide range of other health benefits. Unlike other cannabinoids, CBD is thought to be the ultimate anti-inflammatory cannabinoid.

Medical Benefits of CBD

There is a misconception as to whether CBD can help treat patients, similar to pharmaceutical medicine, but thanks to the internet and a few different medical studies patients and researchers have been exposing their findings on how CBD oil is helping to cure a wide range of medical conditions.

The most popular story was the one of Charlotte Figi. At the time Charlotte was only 6 years old. As a little girl, she was experiencing over 300 epileptic seizures per week until she was successfully treated by a CBD-rich strain oil, later named Charlotte’s Web.

The high-quality CBD oil, changed her life, helping her to overcome a 6-year battle. Since her story hit the news, CBD and other cannabinoids of the cannabis plant are constantly being researched to understand how they can help to treat different medical conditions. As a matter of fact, CBD has been thought to help treat over 170 medical conditions, among them severe conditions such as Anorexia, Cancer, Arthritis, Depression, Anxiety, Chronic Pain, Insomnia, Glaucoma, multiple sclerosis and PTSD.

Recent studies have even shown that CBD, may cure life-threatening diseases by altering genes. Other studies have proven that it might even be an effective treatment for osteoarthritis and chronic pain.

The way that CBD works is that it interacts with receptors located in different parts of the central nervous system. These receptors are called CB1 and CB2. Both reflect the areas of the brain they interact with such as the limbic system. When taking CBD, this cannabinoid locks in on these receptors and affects the body in different ways. For example, it can help to block the pain caused by specific medical conditions.

While numerous studies have shown promising results, it is important to understand that CBD research is still at premature stages. A 2011 study that researched CBD for fibromyalgia showed extremely promising results. 56 of 112 participants who took CBD in the form of oil saw a great reduction in their symptoms and pain, while those using traditional methods didn’t see hardly any improvement.

Can you Buy CBD if you live in an illegal state?

The process is not cut-&-dry, and but thanks to the Farm Bill of 2014, forms of CBD can now be delivered to your doorstep. Those that live in recreational states can purchase CBD cannabis oil which is high in potency and extremely effective for helping to treat severe medical conditions, while those that live in other states that are not medical or recreational can benefit from CBD hemp oil. CBD Hemp oil is perfect for helping to treat a wide range of conditions including anxiety, depression and acute pain.
